Pets Are People Too?
Animal law is one of the newest areas of the legal profession. Some lawyers believe people should be allowed to sue on behalf of animals. They believe pets should have the same rights in court as humans.

Animal doctors, or veterinarians, offer medical treatment for pets once available only to humans. To pay for these expensive treatments, people can buy health insurance for their pets. State-of-the –art cancer treatment for dogs can cost as much as $15,000! Compare that to the average cost of pet insurance---about $250 a year.

Non-traditional medicine is even available for animals. Is your dog in pain? ”Pet-u-puncture, “a type of acupuncture, can offer relief. Is your pet stressed out? Take it to a relaxing yoga class.

Like children, pets can attend summer camp and go to daycare, Hotels, too, offer special deals for your pet. At the St. Regis Hotel in Los Angeles, your pet can enjoy a spa treatment ($55) and a fancy steak dinner ($39). At the Holiday Pet Hotel near San Diego, the staff will even organize a birthday party, complete with party hats!

A Lesson in Forgiveness

CURRENT TOPIC READING

On a quiet Saturday afternoon, my friend and I were throwing stones onto the roof of an old lady’s house. It didn’t matter to me that I knew the old lady because I delivered the newspaper to her every day. The truth was we were bored, and throwing stones was something interesting to do-at least to boys like us.

I found a stone and sent it for a ride. However, it slipped out of my hand when I threw it. It hit a small window of the house and broke the glass. The crash sounded very loud. We were afraid of being caught and took off with out delay.

For the next few days, I was so worried about getting into trouble that I didn’t think of the old lady and her broken window. However, when I was sure that I wasn’t in trouble, I started to feel sorry. Besides, I still had to deliver newspapers to the old lady. Every day, she smiled at me when I gave her the paper, but I was no longer comfortable in her presence.

I made up my mind to save the money I made from delivering newspapers, and I calculated that seven dollars would cover the cost of repairing her window. In three weeks, I had the seven dollars ready. I put the money in an envelope and wrote a note. It said that I was sorry for breaking her window, and that I hoped the seven dollars would cover the cost of repairing it.
When it was dark, I walked quietly to old lady’s house, and pushed the envelope under her door. I flet relieved and couldn’t wait to look straight into her eyes once again.

The next day, I handed the old lady her paper, happily returning the warm smile that I received form her. She thanksed me for the paper and said “Here, I have something for you.” It was a bag of cookies. I thanked her and left.

I walked away, enjoying the cookies. They tasted great. After eating several, I discovered an envelope inside the bag and pulled it out. When I opened it, I was very surprised. In the envelope, there were the seven dollars and short note that said,”I’m proud of you!”

Annoucement: Professor Llyn Scott replaces Albert Tang in Sophomore English course

Dear sophomores,
How are you doing?
I'm happy to know a lot of you are really devoted to your assignment, be it typing practice or blog publication of your info.

Here I have a very important announcement to make. That it, after very careful consideartion, i am here to inform you that you are going to have a new teacher for the course "Sophomore English"--Professor Llyn Scott.

Llyn has served, for a long time, as the co-ordinator of Science Library Theater, and also professor in English Department. I believe all of you can recognize her face since you all participated in the last ETCD activities. As for other information about her, you can find it out by yourself later.

I do encounter some schedule conflict starting this semester due to my own research and family lives. More importantly, my doctor recommend me to take more rest (as you know i was once in a pretty scary situation last October). I am still teaching other courses, but I hate to say that, I have to leave these two courses for such reasons. I'm particularly grateful to Llyn's help under such circumstance. Many thanks, Llyn.

I've explained the original design for this coures to Llyn; Typing test, blog & ppt self-introduction, Everyday English in Taiwan, for the first semester; and drama series plan for the second semester. I believe Professor Scott will clarify what she has in mind to modify the plan, and better meet your need in improving English in this coming year. I am certainly looking forward to seeing your improvement. Go!

As far as I know, Llyn doesn't speak any Mandarin at all. Students, dont' be panic. as you will find out immediately, Llyn is very kind and easy to get along with. A well-experienced teacher with Orient students and an outstanding scholar specialized in drama production, Dutch Taiwan, she started her 18-year teaching in Fu Jen ater she taught in south Korea for five years. and you can find out some more info about Llyn in http://www.eng.fju.edu.tw/resume/scott/scott_ccv.htm
